After having called Seoul her home, Ahn spent time in Tijuana to focus on filmmaking, but soon found liberation in the immediacy of music production, able to work solo using just a laptop. As Amazondotcom, her tracks are not so much narrative devices as spatial surroundings, taking into account the function of music in non-Western contexts: »I was wondering why and how rhythms are important in these types of practices: the induction of trances, possession, the intervention of non-human entities,« she explained to DJ Mag.
Personally as well as professionally, Ahn is a close companion to Naafi affiliate Siete Catorce. In 2018, they issued their first collaborative EP, Teardropz, via Bristol-based Nostro Hood System. The following year, the duo created Subreal as a label for their music and that of fellow producers on the fringes of cultural identity, with Amazondotcom's Mirror River as its inaugural release. As Resident Advisor put it, »the EP careens between precisely edited field recordings and decomposing dubstep bass wobbles,« while MixMag praised its »purging, curative feeling of a rainforest ceremony« while noting her as an artist to watch for 2020. Most recently, Siete Catorce and Amazondotcom returned with Vague Currency, a split EP with two tracks each, plus one new joint track – in addition to their contribution to Alterity, a globe-spanning compilation by the London label Houndstooth, nestled among the likes of Deena Abdelwahed and Slikback.
As a filmmaker and visual artist, Ahn has exhibited at the Palais De Tokyo (Paris), Haus der Kulturen der Welt (Berlin), AC Institute (New York City), Curta Cinema Festival (Rio de Janeiro) and many others, besides her live sets at Mutek MX and Boiler Room. With smaller steps now leading to sweeping strides, it seems Amazondotcom is in her prime.
