With a background in piano, James eventually developed a passion for electronic music and digital production, influenced by the sounds of her city, from IDM to grime. Although she went on to study music, her own creative output has been guided by a less formal approach, also influenced by improvisational forms that veer into jazz and ambient territories.

After her self-released debut album Detail, Loraine James signed on to Hyperdub for her second album, For You and I, issued in 2019. In the second half of 2020, besides a remix for Darkstar on Warp Records, she followed up with three releases, including the collab-heavy Nothing: »With corroded sounds and anxious, wistful guest features, the London producer’s new four-track EP breaks new ground in four different directions« (Pitchfork).
