Besides percussion, he studied instrumental and electronic composition in Lübeck and Essen. Now based in Berlin, Marcoll has written for ensembles and performers worldwide, with compositions broadcast on Deutschlandfunk, ORF, SWR, and other radio stations.
In 2016, Marcoll began a series called »Amproprifications« (a portmanteau of »appropriation« and »amplification«) in which existing works by other composers are modulated by real-time changes in volume. Making use of this procedure, his piece »H A C K« was performed at CTM 2018. Marcoll is a member of the artist collective stock11. As of 2021 he also serves as Professor for Electroacoustic Composition and Sound Art at the University of Music and the Bauhaus University in Weimar.
