Lhooq coined the term »California Sober« to describe the trending lifestyle of people who don’t drink, but smoke weed and do psychedelics. Her work and writing show a firm belief that partying and pleasure must not be rooted in destruction and addiction—but instead, can be meaningful paths to finding meaning, connection, and spiritual transcendence.
She is the author of Weed: Everything You Want to Know But Are Always Too Stoned to Ask (Penguin Random House, 2019), and also runs the weekly Rave New World newsletter, dedicated to exploring individual and societal relationships to drugs, the future of rave culture, and cyber counterculture among other. Her work has appeared in The Los Angeles Times, GQ, The Guardian, FADER, Vogue, and Bloomberg. From 2014-2017, she was also a music editor at VICE, covering underground nightlife and rave culture around the world.
In 2019, Lhooq founded a party called Weed Rave—a revolutionary space for stoners (especially queers, POCs, and femmes) to converge under the new cannabis paradigm. So far, the event has taken place in Los Angeles and New York, and has included CBD-enhanced yoga sessions, discussion panels, weed cooking classes, and of course, all-night dance parties.
