The duo forges a neo-tribalist approach with Shabara's deft extended vocal techniques and Suryadi's uniquely built instruments that combine, for example, the handcrafted »bamboo spear« – which offers both melodic and percussive possibilities, bolstered by amplification and distortion. As The Wire put it in their review of Senyawa's Alkisah, arriving in February 2021: »It’s difficult to characterise Senyawa without leaning on inaccurate tropes or multihyphenates. From Indonesian gamelan to apocalyptic folk, post-punk, no wave, stoner metal and dark-doom-psychedelic-ritualcore, the Javanese duo’s output encapsulates such wide swathes of influences so as to be nearly impossible to summarise.«

The record follows numerous releases over the past decade on labels such as Yes No Wave Music, Morphine Records, and Sublime Frequencies, as well as iDEAL Recordings, who issued their collaborative album Bima Sakti with Stephen O'Malley of Sunn O))). Senyawa have toured their frenetic, largely improvised live performances throughout Indonesia as well as Europe and Australia.
