Known for his dynamic, intense onstage presence, Shabara bridges contemporary metal with traditional Indonesian folk and various theatrical styles.

Starting with experimental punk band Zoo in 2005, the vocal artist began making a name for himself through frenetic live performances and fast-paced, urgent records. Five years later, Zoo’s record label Yes No Wave organised an improvisational performance between Rully Shabara and instrument builder Wukir Suryadi, thus hosting the first Senyawa event. Using metal music as their spiritual centre, the duo integrate folk and theatre influences into their compositions and improvisations.

Besides Zoo, Senyawa, and his own output, Rully Shabara has led several other projects, including Setabuhan: comprising solely percussion and voice, the trio offer a modern reinvention of tribal trance, accompanied live by martial arts or amateur street fighters. Over the years, he has also worked with the likes of Keiji Haino, Stephen O'Malley, Otomo Yoshihide, Rabih Beaini, Damo Suzuki, and Justin Vernon. From solo work to collaborations and choir ensembles, a rich thread runs through Rully Shabara’s work: his relationship with nature and an exploration of the possibilities of voice.
