Created by Iranian-born Kurdish singer and artist Hani Mojtahedy, HJirok is a fictional character rooted in the figures of the Sufi dervishes and embodying Mojtahedy’s memories. Drawing from sounds and experiences from her travels with Mouse On Mars’ Andi Toma, HJirok brings together hypnotic Sufi rhythms, setar melodies and field recordings, processed by Toma and synthesised with her extended experimental vocal techniques. Growing up with her grandfather in the Iranian city of Sanandaj and hiding away after the Iranian revolution of 1979, Mojtahedy remembers the brutality of that time clearly. The music of HJirok expresses that struggle for liberation and equality, while expressing a sonic world of peaceful co-existence. Their self-titled debut album is out March 1st on Altin Village & Mine.
