Nairobi-born and currently Berlin-based, sound artist Joseph Kamaru creates abyssal worlds, phantasmagorical sonic sculptures, and tapestries of found sounds and analogue atmosphere. His work posits expanded listening cultures of sonic thoughts and sound practices, a proposition to consider and reflect on auditory cultures beyond the norms, and an awareness of surroundings through creative compositions, installations, and performances. Armed with a sophisticated methodology informed by machine learning, radio art, improv, and field recording, Kamaru’s prolific, ever-unfurling output has been released across labels like Editions Mego, Subtext, Seil, and Warp.
Kamaru is also a core member of the DIY project Black Bandcamp, which promotes Black artists and labels, and frequently organises workshops for Nairobi Ableton User Group. The grandson of celebrated activist and Benga musician Joseph Kamaru, Kamaru the Younger is also responsible for managing reissues of the Elder’s music.
