The percussionist and bassist is renowned for her art with the 19th-century Peruvian wooden drum, bringing a rich passion to her playing informed by the popular music of Latin America. Born in Swaziland and raised in Lima, she found her calling in music from a young age, immersed in Afro-Peruvian and Cuban aural traditions. She lent her skills to a variety of genres including jazz, funk, and free improv, playing in the band Astrocombo and working with such musicians as the Ensemble Neue Musik Zürich, Maria Schneider, Wanja Slavin, Christian Weidner, and WDR Big Band. Together with Peruvian artist Ale Hop, Robles will present their album Agua Dulce, a deconstruction of the cajón and its roots as an instrument of rebellion against enslavement.
