The ascribing of older materials being incorporated into the new plays a big role in Versailles’ work. Her diverse and eclectic sets blend sonic artefacts old and new – sometimes at once – with soundtracks, dialogue, and field recordings to create a hauntological soundscape that bumps like a coffin lid. A multimedia journalist, she explores sociopolitical dynamics within art, providing a deeper look into creative culture. Along with her monthly radio show on Refuge Worldwide and her own creation, the newsletter, radio show, and archival project Cultural Learnings, she’s a managing partner for the independent online platform Manila Community Radio, which provides resources and a platform for marginalised voices.
To help support part of her research, Versailles is currently fundraising together with Sean Bautista. As part of MCR’s ongoing effort to document the from the Bisaya region’s grassroots dance genre budots, they’re organising research in Cebu and Davao to explore how privilege impacts understanding of vernacular music, collected through interviews and focus group discussions as well as fieldwork.
