Hailing from Central Siberia, Russia, with Bashqort roots, Stas delves into the intersection of sound and decoloniality. A musician, researcher, and artist residing in Basel, their work explores the political dimensions of various musical and listening practices, employing live performances, lectures, interventions, and sound installations as vehicles to address issues such as extractivism, identity-based oppression, collective memory, and militant ethnography. For Shärifulla, the intertwining of action and research is a fundamental aspect.
Under the moniker HMOT, their work celebrates dichotomies and contrasts, such as in the ultra-optimistic This Music Greets Death, and explores uncanny and mystic futures and soundtracks. They are currently a guest docent at Institute Art Gender Nature (IAGN), associate researcher at the Critical Media Lab Basel, and a guest lecturer at Sound Studies and Sonic Arts M.A., UdK Berlin University of the Arts.
